Shippensburg

Scenic Shippensburg is a friendly and attractive college town in Cumberland Valley PA. Located on our county's western-most border, it is still just a short drive from many metro areas including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Shippensburg offers a desirable balance of industry, agriculture and education-so it's no wonder that the town has been rated as one of the "100 Best Small Towns in America."  Spend an afternoon learning about Civil War history or taking a walking tour with the Shippensburg Historical Society or shop for local foods and ingredients at an assortment of farm retail locations. You can also spend a day outdoors hiking or biking on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail.

Spend an evening at Shippensburg University's premier facility, the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center. Enjoy first-class performances including Grammy-winning orchestras, Broadway-style performances, dance groups, comedians and nationally known artists.

Fast & Fun Facts:
  • Pague and Fegan, located downtown, is the oldest continually operated hardware store in Pennsylvania.
  • Settled in 1730 by Scots Irish families, Shippensburg is the oldest community in the Cumberland Valley.
  • A borough in both Cumberland and Franklin counties, Shippensburg has been the home of many industries, including the Beistle Company, the oldest and largest manufacturer of decorations and party goods, and the Volvo facility.
Annual Event:
  • Corn Festival (August) Voted Best One Day Street Fair in PA

Those relocating and residents can find helpful information at the Shippensburg Borough, Shippensburg Township and Southampton Township websites.
