GET THE SCOOP ON A HIKING TRADITION

What better way to commemorate an invigorating hike on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail than with a few scoops of ice cream! For nearly 30 years, that's how hikers have celebrated reaching the halfway point (located in Cumberland Valley) of the 2,000 mile trail. Nearly 30 miles of the trail's most gentle sections span the Cumberland Valley, and right at the center is Pine Grove Furnace State Park, where the tradition goes that "halfway" hikers treat themselves to a half-gallon of ice cream at the park's General Store. Then they receive a commemorative wooden spoon and get to leave their mark by signing the "halfway club" book registry.

After treating yourself to ice cream, why not stay at the newly renovated Ironmaster's Mansion hostel?
