At 1,083 acres Carlisle Springs State Game Lands #230 contains a mix of rich woodlands and fields for biking, hiking, hunting and birdwatching. 44 acres are used for a high-use shooting ranges. Free and open to the public. Please follow game land regulations as posted in parking areas.

Hiking: The Tuscarora Trail passes right by the park on the Perry and Cumberland Valley line at Cranes Gap. There are several dirt roads available for hiking. The 1st road to the right leads to the Pistol Range. The 2nd & 3rd make a loop around a food plot. The fourth entrance on the right leads to the Rifle Range. All trails are less than .5 mile.

Birding: Catch a glimpse of a variety of species including the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and an assortment of field warblers including the Yellow-breasted Chat. Catch a great view of the Kittatinny Ridge.

DESIGNATED ROUTES for Horses and Bicycles 1.0 Mile: Starting at a gate along State Route 944 in North Middleton Township, and traversing a Game Lands road 1.0 mile north, east, and then south back to State Route 944.

Shooting Ranges

Those who shoot firearms at one of the Pennsylvania Game Commission's state game lands public shooting ranges must possess and carry with them either an annual $31.97 range use permit or a current general hunting or furtaker license.  Individuals without a range use permit or hunting or furtaker license may be fined. Each licensed hunter or range permit holder may have one guest.

Unless otherwise posted, these ranges are open year-round, from 8 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Saturday, and noon to sunset on Sundays. 

  • Rifle: 9 Firing Points / 300 Yards
  • Hand Gun: 25 Firing Points / 25 Yards

NOTICE: Anyone who rides a non-motorized vehicle, conveyance or animal on State Game Lands must do so only on designated routes. Such riding activities will not be permitted, except on Sundays or on roads open to public travel, from the last Saturday in September to the third Saturday in January, and after 1 p.m. from the second Saturday in April to the last Saturday in May. This does not apply to anyone lawfully engaged in hunting, trapping or fishing on State Game Lands.

  • Directions: Directions: From Interstate 81, take Carlisle exit 47, Route 34/Hanover Street. Travel north on Route 34 through Carlisle and continue to the village of Carlisle Springs. Turn left on Route 944 West (Enola Road), and watch for signs on the right.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Saturday, and noon to sunset on Sundays
