details

Located on the campus of Lutheran Theological Seminary, the Museum, which opened in July 2013, features four floors and 20,000 square feet of interactive exhibit galleries and educational programming to interpret three major areas of emphasis:

  • the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on Seminary Ridge;
  • the care of the wounded and human suffering during the museum building's use as a Civil War field hospital; and
  • the larger issues of faith and freedom.

In addition to artifacts and documents, the museum building features the famous cupola used by General Buford during the Battle of Gettysburg. Tours of the cupola are available as an add-on to the general admission ticket. The cupola is not handicapped accessible and guests must be 13 years of age or older to enter.

The Museum also offers a mile-long walking trail through the Lutheran Theological Seminary campus. Wayside markers along the trail help visitors under Seminary Ridge's role in the Battle of Gettysburg, the history and role of the museum building, and the religious and social contributions of the Seminary.
