Winter
Winter in Cumberland County finds the hills
and valley covered in snow, perfect for snowmobiling, ice skating, ice fishing, and cross country skiing at Pine Grove Furnace State Park and Colonel Denning State
Park. And for downhill ski and snowboard enthusiasts, enjoy daytime and nighttime skiing and boarding at
the region's oldest and well-known mountain, Ski Roundtop, only 20 miles from Carlisle.
Spring
Spring's warm sunny days bring winter run-off
that swells the creeks, streams, and lakes just in time for the
start of the fishing season. Fishermen from around the country
come to try their luck in our well-known trout streams, the Letort
and the Yellow Breeches. Hikers enjoy spring's cooler temperatures
while day hiking through farmland terrain on the Appalachian
Trail as well as along hiking trails that run through
the mountain and lake areas of our state parks. Bike riders peddle
the scenic Rail Trail from Shippensburg to Newville and
continue riding on miles of less-traveled country roads. Off-road
and mountain bikers will enjoy some of Pennsylvania 's most difficult
and technical trails at Michaux State Forest.
Join one of the three extreme mountain bike races held there
every year.
Summer
Summer's long warm days offer the perfect climate
for canoeing and kayaking on the Susquehanna River, for picnicking,
boating and camping in our state parks, and for playing golf at
one of seven courses in the county. During the summer, with farm
operations in full swing, hikers and bikers enjoy the country scenery
while sharing the road with working tractors and horse and buggies.
