CUMBERLAND COUNTY HISTORY WITH JEFF WOOD: OUT, OUT, BRIEF CANDLE: FAMOUS AND OBSCURE LIVES IN COUNTY HISTORY
Jeff Wood has presented the Fall Series at the Society since 2000. He is the owner of the Whistlestop Bookshop, is past-President of the Cumberland County Historical Society and is currently President of the Bosler Memorial Library.
Every year the Fall Series has retold the history of the county from different perspectives. This year's seven sessions begin in the early years of the county with the arrival of three groups of immigrants that seemed to have little in common but who worked out to be a dynamic team of settlement. Next we look at one of the most storied of county families and the legends that cluster around it. We follow a young woman West and her untimely return. We re-open the Carlisle Opera House to revisit a moment of glory. We take a fresh look at the most famous of county boarders and how he never really left. Finally, we fly in during World War II with one of the best pilots in the nation whose fate here touches national history to this very day. International heroes and heroines to humble and domestic folk will be the portraits of this year's series.
The series consists of lectures and audience discussion. It will be enhanced with power point tours of relevant county sites and objects of interest from local collections and the Historical Society's archives.
