CARLISLE, PA (April, 29 2009) - Join the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau for an intellectual awakening to violence, truth and hope through great literature, music, virtual tours and first-person interpreters during the Pennsylvania Quest for Freedom Live and Learn Weekend May 8-9 in Carlisle, PA.
The weekend's featured book Song Yet Sung by James McBride highlight's a young freedom seeker's struggle for democracy during the Underground Railroad era.
"Freedom resonates well within each one of us, yet rarely are we summoned to consider the history of its conquest," said marketing manager, Valerie Hacker. "This program will provide the opportunity to relive our nation's struggle for democracy and relate it to today's society." The talented Pennsylvania Past Players, first-person interpreters, will bring the weekend's dialogue to life. Their stories and interaction will sweep guests back into the 19th-century.
"The event is designed to spark group discussions," said sales manager, Dawn Rickenbach. "Song Yet Sung is extremely thought provoking addressing issues of race and identity, and moral choices among whites and blacks." Friday night's events are free and will include the scholar-led book discussion followed by an evening reception on the Art-Deco styled stage of the Carlisle Theatre with hors d'oeuvres, wine and live jazz.
Saturday will begin at Dickinson College with a fascinating virtual field trip recreating the journey of Henry "Box" Brown and buildings associated with the Underground Railroad, some no longer standing, and continue with a guided tour of the Cumberland County Historical Society. Visitors will join the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's Black History Conference at the YWCA for a John Vashon and Jon Peck presentation. The day will conclude with a historical marker dedication and celebration for Bethel AME Church.
The first 25 participants registered for both days will receive a free copy of the book. Friday night activities are free. The cost for Saturday is $25/person or $40/couple. Participate in one or all events. Space is limited and preregistration is required for both days.
