Celebrate the new year at some of these events in the Cumberland Valley! Ahead this January are a number of performances, community events and the famed Pennsylvania Farm Show. 

1. Seussical

"Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss's best-loved stories collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Adapted from the Broadway version, this musical adaptation, especially for young audiences, features The Cat in the Hat as the host and emcee (and all-around mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. 

This program is approximately one hour in length and is appropriate for audiences in grades K-5.

2. 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show

Celebrate agriculture at the 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest agricultural exposition in the country. With nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibits spread throughout 11 buildings, the Farm Show offers something for the whole family. See the most up-to-date farm equipment and learn about the farming practices and farming needs. Enjoy the animals -- both large and small. And, don't forget a stop at the Food Court for honey ice cream, potato donuts, milkshakes, pork barbecue sandwiches, fresh maple syrup, blooming onions, chicken breast sandwiches, fish sandwiches, and apple cider... just to name a few menu items.

3. Murder On The Nile

Simon Mostyn has recently married Kay Ridgeway, a rich woman, having thrown over his former lover, Jacqueline. The couple are on their honeymoon on a paddle steamer on the Nile, accompanied by a bevy of memorable characters. Among those present are Canon Pennefather, Kay's guardian, and Jacqueline, who has been dogging their footsteps all through the honeymoon. Murder and mayhem ensure. By the time the boat reaches its destination, Canon Pennefather has laid bare an audacious conspiracy and has made sure the criminals shall not go free.

4. First Day Hike

Resolve to start the New Year on the right foot with an easy 1.5 mile hike on fairly level trails in the Pine Plantation. Learn about the park's trail system and more hiking opportunities throughout the coming year. Registration is not required for this free hike. Leashed dogs are welcome. In the case of snow on the trails, snow shoes will be made available for use (limited sizes available). Please wear appropriate footwear and apparel.

5. Plaza Suite

Three separate stories concerning relationship issues are presented, each largely taking place in suite 719 of the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

6. 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

Join the 28th Carlisle Community Commemoration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme for 2017 is "Take a stand. Take a step toward unity in our community."

The commemoration will begin at 3 pm with a ceremonial march and brief program in downtown Carlisle. The march will start at First Presbyterian  Church and will proceed across High Street at the Square to the Cumberland County Courthouse. Participants in the march are asked to assemble at First Presbyterian at 2:45 pm. Following the program at the Courthouse, the march will resume back to the church. The commemoration will continue at 4 pm with a service in the sanctuary followed by a reception. The featured speaker is the Rev. Thomas A. Keys, pastor of the Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, Harrisburg.

7. Pennsylvania Auto Show

Carlisle Events' car shows may be over for the season, but you can still get your car fix at the PA Auto Show. Hundreds of the hottest new cars and trucks are displayed all in one place. You can also stop by the Powersports Hall to see boats, personal watercraft, motorcycles, ATVs, and more. On Friday and Saturday there will be a kids entertainment area with an inflatable slide and moonbounce, plus face painting and animal balloons. Over 2,200 on-site parking spaces are available. There is also off-site parking located at the Elmerton Avenue lot.

10. First Fridays in Downtown Mechanicsburg!
