Despite the 90 degree weather on Saturday I headed down to Shippensburg for the March to Destiny Civil War Encampment and Reenactment. I was amazed that after going to Shippensburg University for 4 years I had never heard of this event until I moved to Mechanicsburg, so I really wanted to see what I had been missing all those years.
There were three areas set up in the downtown area for the reenactors to pitch their tents and camp for the three-day event. I was surprised at how authentically some of them chose to spend those three days. Here is a picture of one of the tiny tents they stayed in. While walking around the reenactors were excited to engage in conversation and since it was lunch time many of them were cooking out over their fire pits. The coolest part of the whole event was the street skirmish reenactment. I can't imagine being able to get closer to the action at any other reenactment! They were on the street shooting at each other and we were on the sidewalk staying out of their way. Has anyone ever been to the March to Destiny event? I hear they also have a Civil War Dance on the Saturday night of the event.
