Larry Luxenberg thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1980 and wrote an entertaining book about his experiences and the people he met. His talk will cover a brief history of the Trail’s first century, the conservationists who developed it and continue to do so, and the hikers who have enjoyed it since its beginning. He will also cover the AT as it winds through the Cumberland Valley and South and North Mountains.
Larry’s book, “Walking the Appalachian Trail”, was published in 1994. In 1998, He founded the Appalachian Trail Museum in Pine Grove Furnace State Park, which is very close to the midway point of the trail. He is recognized as an authority on AT history and, in particular, the pioneer thru-hikers. He has also served on the boards of the American Hiking Society and the Earl Shaffer Foundation. He is a life member of the Keystone Trails Association.
