Dickinson will present four performances of the groundbreaking 1963 play “Oh, What a Lovely War” on Friday, March 1; Saturday, March 2; Monday, March 4; and Tuesday, March 5. All performances begin at 8 p.m. in Dickinson’s Mathers Theatre, Holland Union Building, 28 N. College St. Tickets cost $7, or $5 with a student ID, and are available through the online box office.

Presented by the Mermaid Players and the Dickinson Department of Theatre & Dance to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, “Oh, What a Lovely War,” tells the story of that conflict from the perspective of the common British soldier. Created by the visionary director Joan Littlewood and her Theatre Workshop, the piece juxtaposes the playfulness of British popular culture and the nostalgic songs of the period against the horrors of the war. The audience experiences the contradictory emotions of delight and political anger through music, imagery, and storytelling. As the play progresses, the soldiers' songs become increasingly bitter and cynical, while the tunes themselves are inherently moving.
