The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) welcomes Columbia University Professor Dr. Paul Thomas Chamberlin to discuss his 2018 book The Cold War’s Killing Field: Rethinking the Long Peace on Wednesday, November 9, at 6:30 p.m. EST at USAHEC, 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013. The lecture is the fourth of four fall lectures for the theme “Historical Mindedness in a Near-Peer Competitive Environment” and is free and open to the public. The lecture will also be live-streamed at https://www.armywarcollege.edu/live/

In his lecture, Dr. Chamberlin brings awareness to the bloody truths of the Cold War that are forgotten, along with the millions of casualties of the Cold War during a period of decolonization in Asia and Africa. Dr. Chamberlin provides an in-depth understanding of the Cold War’s origins following the two World Wars by reframing the Cold War era by explaining numerous battles in avoidance of nuclear war. In displaying the power struggle between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R, Dr. Chamberlin captures the stories of victims caught in the crossfires of democracy and communism across Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.

Dr. Paul Thomas Chamberlin is an Associate Professor of History at Columbia University. He also published his Ph.D. dissertation, The Global Offensive: The United States, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the Making of the Post-Cold War Order, which went on to win the 2010 Oxford University Press Prize for the best dissertation in international history.

The USAHEC’s Perspectives Lecture Series is a graduate-level speaker program with two lecture seasons per year. The event is free and open to the public.
