details

The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg is the only museum in the United States that portrays the entire picture of the American Civil War. Exhibits and presentations are equally balanced and not biased to the Union or Confederate causes. The museum houses a collection of over 4,000 artifacts and 21,000 archival documents.

The museum emphasizes on "the human side" of the Civil War and tells stories dating from 1850-1876, in order to explain the causes and aftermath of this critical time in American history.

Guests begin their tour on the second floor where there are 10 galleries starting with a time line of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and ending with Civil War music. The first floor includes seven galleries starting with Gettysburg: 1863 and ending with Lincoln: War & Remembrance which provides a retrospective of the war, provides information on the martyred president, and explores the role of veterans after the war.
