Sunset Rocks Trail also known as Little Rocky Ridge is in the Michaux State Forest. This trail is one of the most popular hikes in the area because it offers great views and takes the hiker to the ruins of a top-secret World War II POW camp. It is very steep so watch your footing!
If you feel up to the challenge this can be made into a long loop of about 8.3 miles by walking to Michaux Road turning left and then hiking by the ruins to the abandoned road leading back to your parking space. This makes for a great weekend hike so that you don't have to rush. Park at Pine Grove Furnace State Park near the Iron Furnace. There are restrooms available beside the furnace.
You can reduce the trail length by making this an out and back hike; however, in doing so you will miss the ruins unless you take the abandoned road from the parking area (then you miss the views).
There are also two additional parking areas that allow for even shorter hikes. Both Old Shippensburg Road and Michaux Road offer gravel parking areas (Old Shippensburg Road turns into a dirt road with a dead end) but are limited to a handful of vehicles.
Surface: Dirt, Grass & Paved. Slope: Moderate to Difficult, due to short climbs (note: there is a short section of two-handed climbing over boulders). Type: Loop. Length: 8.3 miles.
- Directions: Directions: From Interstate 81 take Exit 37. Turn onto Route 233 South. Continue on Route 233 and cross over Route 174. Go 6 miles to a stop sign and turn right to continue on Route 233. Travel through Pine Grove Furnace State Park and turn north onto Michaux Road. The trail will be on the left side of the road. Or you can take Old Shippensburg Road from Route 233 and park where it dead ends (this is the shorter hike).
