details

The Bower is a 36 acre meadow and woodland site on the north slope of the Appalachian Mountains. Located in Perry County Pennsylvania (30 minutes from Carlisle, PA), The Bower is a sanctuary where art and the natural world co-exist in harmony. We envision The Bower as a community-oriented rural setting featuring woodlands, naturalized landscape, gardens and large scale sculpture and land art. We are committed to supporting and becoming a resource for the arts, educational and nonprofit communities.

Visitors begin with a meadow walk which takes them through the planted gardens, the six-acre meadow, along the woods edge or savanna, and the rain filled “pools”. Curated sculptures are carefully sited into the environment to enhance the visitor’s experience. The walk can be extended with a one mile trail through the forest and, if desired, to the top of Little Mountain.  Walking sticks are highly recommended for this rocky path.  Our visitor center provides information on native plants and the sculptures. Over 200 species of native trees, shrubs, forbs, and grasses are on display at The Bower, placed by wind, birds, animals, and humans. Garden spaces and meadows display plantings which delight bees, birds, butterflies, praying mantis, and people.

The Bower is part of a private residence and reservations are required. Reservations open one month in advance, and spots are taken quickly. Group tours can be arranged outside of normal reservation days with advance notice. Be sure to check the events calendar for special events.
