There’s plenty to do indoors as well, from family-friendly games to a vibrant arts and entertainment scene. Time your getaway right, and you can enjoy one of several winter events, from the Pennsylvania Farm Show to the Carlisle Ice Art Fest.
LODGING
Make your getaway extra cozy by staying in one of our many bed and breakfasts. At a B&B, you’ll receive personalized attention in one-of-a-kind surroundings – not to mention delicious breakfasts made from locally sourced ingredients! Enjoy the hospitality and charm of Cumberland Valley as you allow yourself to be pampered after an exciting day.
DAY ONE
Dinner and a Show
After you settle into your B&B, head out for dinner and a show. With so many theaters and restaurants to choose from, we put together a few recommendations based on the nearest town. The Luhrs Center, located on the Shippensburg University campus, offers a variety of concerts, ballets, and comedy shows, including winter favorites like the Nutcracker, Mannheim Steamroller, and Swan Lake and the historic (pictured above) offers first-run and independent films, theatrical performances, and concerts. If visual arts are more your thing, peruse one of over 20 art galleries and studios featuring work by local and established artists across a variety of mediums.
DAY TWO
Start with a leisurely breakfast at your B&B, then bundle up for a day of outdoor adventures.
Skiing and Snowboarding
The fun begins at Roundtop Mountain Resort. Enjoy the brisk winter air on this picturesque mountain, which offers skiing and snowboarding slopes for all ages. Lessons and rentals are also available. If you prefer something a little tamer, snow tubing is a blast, and no experience is required.
Lunch and Coffee
If you want to spend more time at Roundtop, grab lunch at their Fireside Pub & Grill. Or if you’re ready to move on, stop at one of Cumberland Valley’s cozy and inviting cafes or coffee shops to fill your stomach, warm up, and get a caffeine boost before your next adventure. For winter getaways in February (or if you’re around in early spring), be sure to check in on the Coffee and Chocolate Trail for a chance to win prizes for your patronage.
Ice Skating and Ice Fishing
After enjoying the morning on the mountain, spend your afternoon on a lake at Pine Grove Furnace State Park or Colonel Denning State Park. Their lakes are open for ice skating and ice fishing. Be sure to check the weather and ice conditions before either of these activities. Safety first! Both parks are also great for hiking or cross-country skiing.
Indoor Alternatives
If you’d rather stay warm indoors, hit the Cumberland Valley Beer Trail to explore more than 25 breweries, cideries, distilleries, and wineries. Discover the best local flavors and earn points for each location visited, which you can redeem for prizes. Just remember to drink responsibly and consider riding in style with one of our transportation partners.
DAY THREE
Brunch
While you can certainly enjoy another breakfast at your B&B, consider venturing out to one of the best brunch spots in Cumberland Valley. Celebrate the end of a wonderful weekend with a mimosa at the Grateful Goat Brewing Company or chicken & waffles at the Watershed Pub. Several brunch spots are part of the Cumberland Valley Beer Trail, if you’d like to earn a few more points during your stay.
Indoor Fun for the Whole Family
Before you head home, make time for a family-friendly indoor activity or two. Enjoy laser tag, indoor go-karting, and virtual reality gaming at the Carlisle Sports Emporium. Or keep things retro with bowling, billiards, and arcade games at the Coliseum Megaplex. If you want to tire out the kids before your drive home, take them to SkyZone Indoor Trampoline Park.
