Discover New Cumberland
The charming town of New Cumberland has a lot to offer in the way of dining and shopping. Cumberland Valley's southernmost town on the banks of the West Shore was originally a ferry site for early English, Irish, Scottish and German settlers crossing the Yellow Breeches Creek. Today, a historic iron bridge welcomes visitors to this friendly community.
The "Olde Towne Association" is restoring the town with brick sidewalks and period decorative details to attract shoppers, tourists, prospective residents and businesses. Below are some great recommendations of places you can eat, shop and experience for an afternoon or day in lovely New Cumberland.
Start your day off right with a delicious breakfast. New Cumberland offers three great options for the most important meal of the day. The cozy atmosphere of Murphy's Homestyle will make you feel like you're having pancakes at your grandma's house. The recently opened, Loft Eatery is tucked on the second story of a building along Bridge Street. Although they are fairly new in town, they are already pleasing guests with omelets, pancakes, sourdough French toast and more.
Last, but certainly not least, the cleverly named Brew Crumberland's Best offers amazing coffee drinks, big pastries and build-your-own sandwiches. If you're in a hurry they even have a drive-thru.
On to lunch! Shugar's Philly Deli has been pleasing crowds for years with their traditional cheesesteaks and other great sandwiches. Now after lunch, you can grab a cool treat since Hall's Ice Cream opened inside Shugar's. TJ Homestyle, Brew Crumberland's Best and The Loft Eatery all also serve lunch.
When it comes to dinner, New Cumberland offers two relaxing spots to enjoy a night out. Nick's 114 Café offers hometown favorites like burgers, prime rib, wings, crab cakes and more. Pete's Olde Towne Bar & Grill's casual neighborhood atmosphere features flatbread pizzas, pulled pork, homemade soups, stromboli, fried chicken, clams and mussels. Shugar's and Legends are also open for dinner.
New Cumberland is filled with a collection of shops you can't find anywhere else. Oxford Hall Celtic Shop offers a variety of Irish and Celtic imports including certified jewelry, sweaters, Baptism and Communion outfits, wedding gifts, Guinness items and more.
The on-site Irish/English Tea Shop sells a variety of condiments, candy bars, canned goods and other specialty items directly from Ireland. You can also dine on soups, British pasties, meat pies, bangers, Scotch eggs and more.
Next, continue down Bridge Street and visit Tickle My Senses Gallery. This charming space features one-of-kind pieces for sale in mediums including ceramics, glass, wood, mixed media, metals and jewelry from over 125 local, regional, national and Canadian artists.
The Inner Connection is described as a "metaphysical adventure shop" offering Rune, Tarot, Aura, Gemstone, Angel/Spirit and Astrology Readings. The shop also carries a selection of spiritual healing products including aromatherapy, incense, candles, self-help books and more.
Half Moon Handwerks and 3rd Street Gallery share a space on this street. Half Moon Handwerks sells a large variety of quilting embellishments and 3rd Street Gallery has a small art display with art classes available to the public.
Before heading out of town, stop by Smith Custom Framing & Fine Art Gallery. This frame shop and gallery is tucked down on Reno Avenue and offers a great display of artwork for sale. They also specialize in creative and quality framing options.
Enjoy the retro vibe at the West Shore Theatre located right downtown on Bridge Street. This classic-single screen theatre, which opened in 1940, is still showing movies throughout the week.
In September, you don't want to miss the New Cumberland Apple Festival at the nearby New Cumberland Borough Park. This one-day event features tons of apple treats, craft vendors, entertainment and more.
