Buchanan State Forest covers 71,683 acres in Franklin, Fulton, and Bedford counties and boasts an extensive 157 mile shared-use trail system. The state forest also contains networks of local trails through many types of forest that range from easily-hiked paths to steep and rocky trails originally built as fire breaks. Two state parks -- Cowans Gap and Buchanan's Birthplace -- are located within Buchanan State Forest.
