Baltimore, we love you—but sometimes you just need to get out of town.

The good news? A change of scenery is closer than you might think. Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania, is an easy drive from the Baltimore area, making it just right for a spontaneous weekend escape. Trade traffic, errands, and the usual routine for charming downtowns, scenic trails, locally owned restaurants, craft beverages, and plenty of room to slow down.

And because you won't spend half your weekend getting here and back, you'll have more time for the things you actually want to do.

Here's one way to spend a relaxing Friday-to-Sunday getaway in Cumberland Valley.

Friday Evening: Make Your Escape

Sunday Brunch Along The Cumberland Valley Beer TrailPack the car after work and point yourself toward Pennsylvania. Before long, you'll leave the city behind and arrive in Cumberland Valley with plenty of Friday night left to enjoy.

Check into your hotel, inn, or bed-and-breakfast, then head out for dinner. Keep it casual with a neighborhood favorite. Check out our Meal Madness Final 8 winners to see what makes Cumberland Valley’s food scene so special. Afterward, toast the start of the weekend with Cumberland Valley craft beer, artisan cocktails, and Pennsylvania wines. Start your journey along the Cumberland Valley Beer Trail, where check-ins can earn you points toward prizes.

If you're staying near one of our downtowns, take an after-dinner stroll. Browse the streets of Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, or another nearby community to get a feel for the Valley.

Then call it a night. There's no need to pack every minute of your getaway. That's kind of the point.

Saturday Morning: Coffee, Breakfast & the Great Outdoors

Hiking in Cumberland ValleyStart Saturday the way weekends should begin: slowly. Before you head out, consider these Cumberland Valley favorites, as voted on by our residents, who shared their strong opinions on social media during The Cumberlands campaign.

Find a local coffee shop, bakery, or breakfast spot to fuel up before heading outdoors. Cumberland Valley offers thousands of acres of parks and forests and miles of trails, so you can choose an adventure that matches your idea of a good Saturday morning.

Take a leisurely walk through a local park, hike a section of the Appalachian Trail (the midpoint of this iconic footpath is in Pine Grove Furnace State Park), explore one of our state parks (free entry), or simply find a scenic spot to enjoy some fresh air.

You don't need to conquer a mountain before lunch. Unless, of course, that's your thing.

Saturday Afternoon: Wander a Little

Downtown Carlisle ShoppingAfter your outdoor adventure, spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace.

Head into downtown Carlisle for independent shops, galleries, history, and plenty of places to grab lunch. Search for a new favorite at a local bookstore, hunt for vintage finds and antiques, or see what you discover simply by wandering a few blocks without an agenda.

Depending on the season, you might also visit a farm market, explore one of the Valley's historic sites, check out a local festival or event, or follow one of our seasonal passport trails and experiences.

This is your weekend. Pick what sounds good and skip what doesn't.

Saturday Evening: Stay Out—or Settle In

As evening rolls around, it's time for another good meal. Try somewhere completely new or choose a spot that caught your eye earlier in the day. Find some suggestions on how to Eat Like a Local.

After dinner, keep the evening going with live music or a show. You'll find a variety of movies and performances at the charming Art Deco Carlisle Theatre or the recently restored West Shore Theatre. Or head back to your accommodations, put your feet up, and enjoy not having anywhere else to be.

Tomorrow's plans can wait until tomorrow.

Enjoy Sunday brunch or make another stop at a local coffee shop before squeezing in one last Cumberland Valley experience.

If Saturday was active, make Sunday morning leisurely. Each season offers a different view of the landscape, but the dazzling reds, yellows, and oranges of fall offer the perfect backdrop for a scenic drive through the countryside.  If you're still ready to move, spend some time near the water. Cumberland Valley offers three of the world's most popular fly-fishing destinations--the scenic LeTort Spring Run, Yellow Breeches Creek, and Big Spring Creek Greenway.

And don't forget to pick up something local to take home—a sweet treat, locally made product, or another reminder that a great weekend doesn't have to involve a plane ticket or months of planning.

Sunday Afternoon: Baltimore Bound

After lunch, it's time to return home. You'll be back in the Baltimore area with enough of your Sunday left to unpack, relax, and get ready for the week ahead.

That's one of the best parts of choosing Cumberland Valley for your weekend getaway: it's far enough away to feel like an escape without requiring a long travel day on either end.

Your Weekend Is Closer Than You Think

Sometimes you don't need a big vacation. You just need two nights somewhere different, a good meal you didn't have to cook, a trail you've never walked, a town you've never explored, and a little breathing room between busy weeks.

So, Baltimore, the next time you're ready to get away, head to south-central Pennsylvania to see what's waiting for you in Cumberland Valley.
