Americans have always loved their cars—and in South-Central Pennsylvania, that passion goes into overdrive. Cumberland Valley is a true playground for car lovers, home to world-class car shows, fascinating museums, legendary racetracks, and even classic drive-in theaters. It’s not just the number of automotive attractions that impresses—it’s the caliber.

At the heart of the action is Carlisle Events, whose car shows are the largest on the East Coast. Hosted at the expansive 82-acre Carlisle Fairgrounds, eight annual events celebrate everything from iconic manufacturers to beloved models. Think Ford Nationals, Chevrolet Nationals, Chrysler Nationals, and the fan-favorite Corvettes at Carlisle, which also happens to be the largest Corvette event in the world.

How big are these shows? Major manufacturer events regularly showcase 3,000+ vehicles, drawing enthusiasts from across the country. The season kicks off in April with a massive auction and flea market—ranked among the top five car-focused flea markets worldwide—and cruises through October. After celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2024, the shows hosted by Carlisle Events continue to evolve and grow. (Pro tip: Check the current schedule at carlisleevents.com.)

Dillsburg Farmers FairWhile Carlisle Events anchors the season, summer in Cumberland Valley brings a lineup of smaller car shows woven into popular local festivals. Williams Grove Steam Engine Association features one-day car shows at several of its events throughout the year. In September, the Carlisle Harvest of the Arts festival features the Meeting of the Marques, a street display of sports-touring vehicles focusing on British-made models. You’ll find classic and modern cars lining the streets at the Dillsburg Farmers Fair in October. And, the National Apple Harvest Festival in October features a large display of antique automobiles at the South Mountain Fairgrounds in nearby Adams County. These shows are especially fun because they offer something for everyone—live music, food, crafts, and family-friendly activities alongside the chrome and horsepower.

AACA MuseumPrefer to admire automotive history indoors? Several local museums showcase car culture in comfort. America’s Transportation Experience in nearby Hershey, a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum, features an impressive collection of antique vehicles—including the world’s largest collection of Tucker automobiles and memorabilia.

Sprint car fans won’t want to miss the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) near York Springs. Dedicated to the high-octane history of dirt-track racing, the museum offers free admission and an incredible collection of cars and racing artifacts. Visit during its annual August convention, and you can even watch vintage race cars roar around the adjacent dirt track.

Williams GroveOf course, sometimes you don’t just want to see cars. You want to watch them race. Cumberland Valley delivers. Williams Grove Speedway, a nationally renowned half-mile dirt track, has thrilled fans since 1939. From March through October, the track hosts a full weekend racing schedule, including major events featuring the legendary World of Outlaws sprint car circuit.

South Mountain RacewayOther nearby tracks keep the adrenaline flowing, including Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown (nearby Adams County) and South Mountain Raceway, a countryside drag strip near Boiling Springs where racing runs most Sundays from April through October.

And, for a nostalgic twist on car culture, nothing beats a night at the drive-in. Once a staple of 1950s and ’60s America, drive-in theaters are now a rare treat—only about 375 remain nationwide. This region is lucky to have two: Haar’s Drive-In in Dillsburg and the Cumberland Drive-In Theatre in Newville, both family-owned and operated since the early 1950s.

Whether you’re a die-hard gearhead or simply love the romance of the open road, Cumberland Valley is the perfect place to slow down, tune out weekday noise, and enjoy a car-centric weekend getaway. Come see why this is where the week ends—and the engines start.
