Looking for a fun, driveable getaway this winter? Located in the heart of Cumberland Valley, Carlisle is the perfect place for a cozy escape. Enjoy iconic events like Ice Art Fest, explore history at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, and take a coffee crawl, relaxing with a warm beverage and a pastry at some of our best coffeeshops.
Day 1
Start your weekend with an unforgettable visit to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which is held every year in early January at the nearby PA Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Be sure to come hungry as you eat your way through all the bounty Pennsylvania produces–from the famous farm show milkshakes to beef sandwiches, fried cheese cubes, stuffed mushrooms, and so much more. Get close to livestock like horses, cows, llamas, and rabbits. Browse more than 10,000 exhibits and watch agricultural demonstrations. Check the day’s schedule of events, and you might just get to see a square dance, a tractor pull, or a rodeo! And don’t forget to snap a picture with the half-ton butter sculpture. The PA farm show is a celebration of Pennsylvania’s largest industry, and draws more than half a million visitors every year. If you can't make it here during the Farm Show, there is more winter fun to come, such as the Ice Art Fest in Carlisle and the Great American Outdoor Show and Motorama, both at the Farm Show Complex!
Day 2
After the crowds, enjoy a quieter day at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) in Carlisle. Considered by Newsweek readers as one of the Best Free Museums, USAHEC endeavors to “tell the army story … one soldier at a time.” Its main gallery houses a “Soldier’s Experience” exhibit that illuminates what it was like to serve in each war from the Spanish-American War to present-day conflicts. Rotating exhibits cover topics such as Animals in the Army and "This We'll Defend: Celebrating 250 Years of Army History."
Be sure to dress warmly, because there’s more to see outside! The one-mile-long Army Heritage Trail features full-scale and interactive military exhibits, including recreated Civil War cabins, WWI trenches, WWII tanks, and a Vietnam War helicopter, as well as a Memorial Garden. As you follow the self-guided path, you’ll learn about the different eras of American military history.
In the spirit of America250PA, you can also visit the nearby Carlisle Barracks for a satellite exhibit at the Hessian Powder Magazine, built during the Revolutionary War. "From Powder to Purpose" explores the rich legacy of this iconic structure and uncovers the captivating story of Carlisle Barracks, one of the oldest military posts in the United States.
Or, take a stroll and uncover the historical gems of Carlisle with our Historic Wayside Markers! Sign up for the free Carlisle History Walk passport, check in, and earn prizes.
Day 3
End your winter weekend with a coffee crawl. The Cumberland Valley coffee scene is exceptional, with cozy cafes, high-quality beans, and skilled baristas crafting specialty drinks. Many coffee shops also serve sandwiches and baked goods so that you can have breakfast and lunch during your crawl, plus a snack or two. Bring a book and stay awhile, or relax and discuss everything you’ve seen this weekend.
We recommend choosing three to five coffee shops for your crawl, but you can decide how often you’d like to switch locations. If you’re willing to travel, embark on a delicious adventure along the seasonal Cumberland Valley Coffee & Chocolate Trail (January 28 to May 11). With more than 20 locations across the Cumberland Valley, you can enjoy the pleasures of rich coffee drinks and delicious confections. Check in at participating locations and earn prizes.
If you’d rather stay close to Carlisle, we recommend starting downtown at Denim Coffee. When you’re ready, head to The Cracked Pot Coffee Shop, which employs and supports youth aging out of foster care. End your crawl with a stop at Helena's Cafe & Creperie with coffee beverages made from robust Lavazza™ espresso.
It’s easy to get over-caffeinated on a coffee crawl. We recommend drinking plenty of water and considering switching to decaf after a few stops to make the most of your day.
