Can you share a bit about your business and how it reflects Cumberland Valley's unique character?
The Cumberland Shop was created with the goal of providing a brick-and-mortar location that displays, sells, and features the works of local creatives and entrepreneurs. We help to not only kick-start small businesses, but also provide a space for anyone to see and touch their amazing pieces.
What inspired you to start the business, and how has the community influenced that journey?
The dream for The Cumberland Shop began with our board president, Nancy A. Hudson. With a vision to provide residents, visitors, and travelers alike with a location to stop in, enjoy, and purchase local creations, she sought a venue that would meet the needs of many. The assortment of creations is deep and wide in its appeal to all ages. From a family curating art for their home to a shopper who needs a bridal or baby gift to someone deciding on the perfect addition to their wardrobe or jewelry collection, we have it! And so much more…!
What makes your products/services special?
Most of our artisans have a connection to the Cumberland Valley, whether they currently live, grew up, or went to school here. We feature an assortment of creations: salad dressing, jams, hot sauces, honeys, spices, soaps, paintings, photography, pottery, cards, resin work, fiber arts, jewelry, purses, and clothing.
What does supporting local businesses mean to you?
Local businesses are the backbone of the community; by giving back, you are helping to grow the dream of another, which in turn grows the community as a whole.
What is one thing you would like visitors and residents to know about your business or Cumberland Valley that they might not already know?
The Cumberland Shop is a non-profit with a heart for local makers and for other non-profits. We support others locally, nationally, and internationally. Locally, we are a drop-off site for WIN Victim Services and Community Cares. Nationally, we are a member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and help to maintain 20 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Internationally, we sell Fair-Trade jewelry and accessories from WorldFinds as well as jewelry and accessories made with Ghanaian materials to help support The Oasis International Training Centre.
